Australian Open 2012: Djokovic & Nadal Contest 3rd Straight Grand Slam Final

Will Djokovic Continue His Nadal Domination?

No. 1 seed Novak Djokovic will play No. 2 seed Rafael Nadal for the 2012 Australian Open Men’s Singles Championship. This will be the third consecutive Grand Slam final contested by these two men. Djokovic defeated Nadal in the 2011 US Open final and in the 2011 Wimbledon final. Djokovic is also the Australian Open defending champion, having defeated Andy Murray in the 2011 final.

Australian Open 2012: Sharapova & Azarenka Play For Title & No 1

The Rookie vs. The Veteran: First Time Finalist Azarenka Plays Six Time Finalist Sharapova

No. 3 seed Victoria Azarenka will play No. 4 seed Maria Sharapova for the 2012 Australian Open Women’s Singles Championship. This will be Azarenka’s first Grand Slam final appearance. Sharapova has appeared in five Grand Slam finals, winning the 2008 Australian Open, the 2006 US Open and the 2004 Wimbledon championships and losing the 2011 Wimbledon final to Petra Kvitova and the 2007 Australian Open final to Serena Williams.

The Australian Open Women’s Champion will also become the world No. 1 ranked player, taking over the top spot from Caroline Wozniacki, who will drop to #4. If Sharapova wins, Azarenka will be ranked #2 and Kvitova will be #3. If Azarenka wins, Kvitova will remain #2 and Sharapova will become #3.

Australian Open 2012 Women Quarterfinals - Undefeated VS Unseeded

Kvitova Won Hopman Cup - Sharapova Did Not Play, Plus Unseeded Makarova & Errani

The remaining women’s quarterfinal matches of the 2012 Australian Open will feature an undefeated Maria Sharapova, who, like Novak Djokovic, did not play a tour event prior to the Australian Open. Petra Kvitova is almost undefeated for the year so far - she won all 4 of her singles events at the Hopman Cup, claiming the title with teammate Tomas Berdych, but lost in the semifinal at Sydney, giving her a 6-1 record for the year.

The other quarterfinalists are:

  • Ekaterina Makarova, who came through the qualifying at Sydney and lost in the first round, giving her a ytd record of 3-1
  • Sara Errani, who lost in the quarterfinals at Auckland and in the second round at Hobart, giving her a 3-2 record for 2012

The remaining men’s quarterfinal matches of the 2012 Australian Open will be played on Wednesday. Three of the men in these quarterfinals matches are undefeated for 2012 - David Ferrer won the Auckland singles title and Andy Murray won the Brisbane singles title. Novak Djokovic is also undefeated for the year, since he did not play any of the 2012 tour events.

The other quarterfinalist is Kei Nishikori, who lost in the second round at Brisbane, giving him a 1-1 record for the year so far.

The first quarterfinal matches of the 2012 Australian Open will be played on Tuesday and, as the following chart shows, these eight men and women have won a total of 35 Grand Slam singles, doubles and mixed doubles championships.
